Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha

Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha, a prominent figure in Ottoman history, served as the first grand vizier during the reign of Sultan Murad I. His appointment marked a significant milestone, as he was the first to officially hold the title of grand vizier, a role that had previously been filled by individuals with different titles. Unlike his predecessors, who hailed from the scholarly class, Çandarlı came from a military background, setting a new precedent for leadership in the empire.

His tenure began in September of one thousand three hundred sixty-four, when he rose to the rank of grand vizier from his position as the chief military judge, known as kazasker. Çandarlı's administration lasted until his death on January twenty-second, one thousand three hundred eighty-seven, making him the longest-serving grand vizier in Ottoman history—a record that would stand for five hundred thirty-five years until the position was abolished in nineteen twenty-two.

Çandarlı Kara Halil Pasha was not only a skilled politician but also a successful military commander. His victory at the Battle of Savra established a lasting Ottoman presence in Albania, showcasing his strategic prowess. He is also credited with initiating the devşirme system, a recruitment method that would lead to the formation of the elite Janissary corps, known for their loyalty and military effectiveness.

Following his death during the Ottoman campaign in Macedonia, Çandarlı was succeeded by his son, Çandarlı Ali Pasha. His legacy continued through his family, as another son, Çandarlı Ibrahim Pasha the Elder, would also ascend to the role of grand vizier, further solidifying the Çandarlı family's influence in the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
