Aedesia

Aedesia, a prominent philosopher of the Neoplatonic school, flourished in Alexandria during the fifth century AD. Renowned for her beauty and virtues, she was closely related to Syrianus and married to Hermias. Following her husband's passing, Aedesia dedicated her life to alleviating the suffering of the needy and nurturing her children, Ammonius and Heliodorus.

Her commitment to education led her to accompany Heliodorus to Athens, where they pursued philosophical studies. In Athens, Aedesia was warmly welcomed by the philosophical community, particularly by Proclus, who had been betrothed to her by Syrianus in her youth. This connection further solidified her esteemed position among the philosophers of the time.

Aedesia lived a long and impactful life, leaving a legacy that resonated through her children and her contributions to philosophy. Her funeral oration was delivered by Damascius, a young philosopher at the time, who honored her memory in eloquent hexameter verses.
