Agnes of Cleves

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Agnes of Cleves

Agnes of Cleves, born on March twenty-fourth, fourteen twenty-two, was the daughter of Adolph I, Duke of Cleves, and his second wife, Marie of Burgundy. Her lineage connected her to the powerful House of Burgundy, as her mother was the daughter of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy.

In the year fourteen thirty-nine, Agnes entered into a significant union with Charles, Prince of Viana, who had been promised the kingdom of Navarre. This recognition by the Cortes marked a pivotal moment in their lives. However, following the death of his mother, Blanche, in fourteen forty-one, King John II of Aragon seized control of Navarre, effectively sidelining Charles from his rightful claim.

Tragically, Agnes's life was cut short when she passed away on April sixth, fourteen forty-eight, at the tender age of twenty-five or twenty-six. Despite their marriage, she and Charles did not have any children, leaving their legacy unfulfilled.

After Agnes's untimely death, Charles contemplated remarriage, choosing Infanta Catherine of Portugal as his next bride. However, fate intervened once more, as Charles himself died in fourteen sixty-one before the marriage could take place, marking the end of a poignant chapter in the history of Cleves and Navarre.
