Agrippina the Younger

Julia Agrippina, known as Agrippina the Younger, was born on November sixth in the year fifteen AD. She emerged as a formidable figure in the Julio-Claudian dynasty, being the great-granddaughter of Augustus, the first Roman emperor. As the daughter of the esteemed general Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, she was steeped in a legacy of power and ambition. Her brother, Caligula, ascended to the throne in thirty-seven AD, and following his assassination in forty-one AD, her uncle Claudius became emperor.

Agrippina's political acumen was evident when she married Claudius in forty-nine AD, positioning herself as a key player in the Roman political landscape. Described by both ancient and modern historians as ruthless and ambitious, she skillfully maneuvered her son Nero into the line of succession, showcasing her influence over the affairs of the state. However, her machinations did not go unnoticed, and Claudius's death in fifty-four AD raised suspicions of foul play, with some suggesting Agrippina's involvement.

During the early years of Nero's reign, Agrippina wielded significant power, but her relationship with her son soured over time. Ultimately, her fall from grace culminated in her death in fifty-nine AD. Agrippina was not only a political force but also noted for her beauty, with Pliny the Elder remarking on a distinctive double canine in her upper right jaw, a trait considered auspicious in Ancient Rome.
