Aida de Acosta

Aida de Acosta, born on July twenty-eighth, eighteen eighty-four, was a pioneering American aviator and socialite. She made history as the first woman to fly a powered aircraft solo, a remarkable feat that showcased her adventurous spirit and determination. Her journey into aviation began in nineteen hundred and three while she was in Paris with her mother, where she first encountered dirigibles, igniting her passion for flight.

With only three flight lessons under her belt, Aida took to the skies independently, demonstrating her courage and skill. Her groundbreaking achievement not only paved the way for future female aviators but also challenged societal norms regarding women's roles in aviation and beyond.

Later in life, Aida faced personal challenges when she lost sight in one eye due to glaucoma. However, she transformed her adversity into advocacy, becoming a prominent figure in the movement for improved eye care. She served as the executive director of the first eye bank in America, dedicating her efforts to enhance the lives of those affected by vision impairment.
