Al-Mutawakkil

Ja'far ibn Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Mutawakkil ʿalā Allāh, commonly known as al-Mutawakkil, was born in March of eight hundred twenty-two and became the tenth Abbasid caliph. His reign began in eight hundred forty-seven and lasted until his assassination in eight hundred sixty-one. Al-Mutawakkil succeeded his brother, al-Wathiq, and is noted for expanding the Abbasid Empire to its greatest extent.

Deeply religious, al-Mutawakkil is remembered for his significant theological decisions, including the dismissal of the Muʿtazila and the conclusion of the Mihna, a period marked by the persecution of Islamic scholars. His actions also included the release of the prominent scholar Ahmad ibn Hanbal, which had lasting implications for Islamic thought.

Despite his contributions to the empire, al-Mutawakkil's rule was characterized by a tough stance, particularly towards non-Muslim subjects. His leadership style and policies often drew criticism and unrest among various factions within the empire.

Tragically, al-Mutawakkil's life came to a violent end on December eleventh, eight hundred sixty-one, when he was assassinated by the Turkic guard, with the complicity of his own son, al-Muntasir. This event marked the onset of a tumultuous period known as the 'Anarchy at Samarra,' which would have profound effects on the stability of the Abbasid Caliphate.
