Alexander of Greece

Alexander of Greece, born on August first, eighteen ninety-three, was the second son of King Constantine I. He was born in the summer palace of Tatoi, located on the outskirts of Athens. His reign as King of Greece began on June eleventh, nineteen seventeen, during a tumultuous period marked by World War I. Following the exile of his father and elder brother, Alexander ascended to the throne, albeit with limited political experience.

Upon his succession, Alexander found himself in a precarious position, stripped of significant powers by the Venizelists, who effectively imprisoned him within his own palace. The prime minister, Eleftherios Venizelos, became the de facto ruler, supported by the Entente Powers. Despite being relegated to the role of a puppet king, Alexander did lend his support to Greek military efforts against the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria, contributing to Greece's territorial expansion during and after the war.

In a controversial move, Alexander married the commoner Aspasia Manos in nineteen nineteen, a decision that sparked a major scandal and led to their temporary exile from Greece. After their return, tragedy struck when Alexander was bitten by a domestic Barbary macaque, resulting in sepsis and his untimely death at the age of twenty-seven. His sudden passing raised questions about the future of the monarchy and played a significant role in the decline of the Venizelist regime.
