Alfonso de Portago

Alfonso Antonio Vicente Eduardo Ángel Blas Francisco de Borja Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton, the 11th Marquess of Portago, was born on 11 October 1928 in London to a distinguished Spanish aristocratic family. Named after his godfather, King Alfonso XIII, he was the grandson of the 9th Marquess of Portago, who held significant political positions, including Minister of Public Instruction & Fine Arts and Mayor of Madrid. His father, a passionate golfer and President of Puerta de Hierro, passed away unexpectedly, leaving a profound impact on young Alfonso. His mother, Olga Leighton, was an Irish nurse, adding to the diverse background of his upbringing.

From a young age, de Portago exhibited a flair for adventure and a penchant for a flamboyant lifestyle. At seventeen, he made headlines by winning a five hundred dollar bet after flying a borrowed plane under London Tower Bridge. His athletic pursuits included competing as a gentleman rider in the Grand National and forming Spain's first bobsleigh team, which impressively finished fourth in the 1956 Winter Olympics, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.

In 1953, de Portago's racing career took off when he joined the prestigious Scuderia Ferrari team. He participated in various high-profile events, including the Carrera Panamericana and the 1000 km Buenos Aires, achieving notable success with a win and a second-place finish at the 1956 Tour de France Automobile and the 1956 British Grand Prix, respectively. His charisma and talent made him a beloved figure in the racing community.

Tragically, de Portago's promising career was cut short on 12 May 1957, when he suffered a fatal crash during the Mille Miglia in his Ferrari 335 S. A tire burst while he was driving at a staggering one hundred fifty miles per hour, resulting in the deaths of Portago, his navigator, and nine spectators. His untimely demise at the age of twenty-eight shocked the world, and his legacy as a playboy and a racing icon endures, with tributes such as the 'Portago curve' at Jarama racetrack commemorating his impact.
