Ali Rıza Efendi

Ali Rıza Efendi, born in 1839 in Selanik, was a notable civil servant and the father of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. His life was intertwined with the rich history of the Ottoman Empire, particularly in the region of Thessaloniki, which was a significant city during that era. His wife, Zübeyde Hanım, hailed from a farming family in Langaza, and together they contributed to the legacy of one of Turkey's most prominent figures.

Ali Rıza's ancestry is a subject of scholarly debate, with some suggesting he was of local descent, possibly Albanian or Slavic, while others assert his roots trace back to the Turkic nomads known as Yörüks from Söke in Aydın Province. This diverse heritage reflects the complex tapestry of identities in the region during the 19th century.

Professionally, Ali Rıza served as a customs official, a role that underscored his commitment to public service. However, his career faced challenges, including a failed venture into the lumber business, which ended tragically when bandits destroyed his stock. This setback, coupled with personal struggles, led him to heavy drinking, which may have contributed to his untimely death in 1888 at the age of forty-nine, leaving behind a seven-year-old Mustafa.

Despite the hardships, Ali Rıza Efendi was dedicated to his son's education, ensuring that Mustafa received a modern secular schooling.
