Alice Coltrane

Alice Coltrane, born on August 27, 1937, was a remarkable American jazz musician, composer, and bandleader, known for her profound contributions to the genre. Often referred to as Turiya, she was not only an accomplished pianist but also one of the few harpists to make a significant mark in jazz history. Her career as a bandleader began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during which she recorded numerous albums for Impulse! and other labels, establishing herself as a leading figure in spiritual jazz.

Coltrane's music was characterized by its eclectic nature, blending various influences that resonated both within the jazz community and beyond. She was married to the legendary jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with whom she collaborated during the years of 1966 to 1967, further enriching her musical journey.

In the mid-1970s, Alice Coltrane shifted her focus towards her spiritual education, which led to a gradual slowdown in her musical career. In 1975, she founded the Vedantic Center, and later, in 1983, she established the Shanti Anantam ashram in California, where she served as the spiritual director. On July 3, 1994, she inaugurated the land as Sai Anantam Ashram, marking a significant milestone in her spiritual endeavors.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Coltrane recorded several albums featuring Hindu devotional songs, showcasing her deep commitment to her faith. In the 2000s, she returned to her roots in spiritual jazz, culminating in the release of her final album, Translinear Light, in 2004, which served as a testament to her enduring legacy in the world of music.
