Andrés Manuel López Obrador, born on November 13, 1953, in Tepetitán, Tabasco, is a prominent Mexican politician, political scientist, and writer. He began his political journey in 1976 as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), where he first served as the director of the Indigenous Institute of Tabasco, advocating for the inclusion of literature in indigenous languages. His political career took a significant turn when he joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in 1989, eventually becoming the party's candidate for Governor of Tabasco in 1994 and its national leader from 1996 to 1999.
In the year 2000, López Obrador was elected as the Head of Government of Mexico City, where he gained popularity through his progressive policies on crime, infrastructure, and social spending. His tenure was marked by a legal battle in 2004 when he faced prosecution for continuing construction on disputed land, a situation that ultimately affirmed his right to run for office. Despite a narrow defeat in the 2006 presidential elections against Felipe Calderón, he remained a significant figure in Mexican politics, leading nationwide protests against electoral irregularities.
In 2011, he founded the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), transitioning from the PRD after opposing its alignment with the Pact for Mexico. López Obrador's political resurgence culminated in a landslide victory in the 2018 general election as the candidate for the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition, marking his presidency as the sixty-fifth president of Mexico, a role he held until September 2024.
Throughout his presidency, López Obrador was characterized as a center-left, progressive leader who sought to address issues of inequality and corruption while promoting public investment and social reforms. However, his administration faced criticism for perceived democratic backsliding and inadequate responses to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. After leaving office, he retired from electoral politics and public life, leaving behind a complex legacy.
