In 2007, Upton made waves with his original play, Riflemind, which premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company. The production received critical acclaim, featuring a stellar performance by Hugo Weaving and was later directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman in its London debut.

Alongside his wife, acclaimed actress Cate Blanchett, Upton co-founded the film production company Dirty Films. His role as a producer was pivotal in the creation of the Australian film Little Fish, released in 2005, showcasing his versatility in the film industry.
