Ashikaga Yoshiteru

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ashikaga Yoshiteru

Ashikaga Yoshiteru, born on March 31, 1536, was a prominent figure in Japanese history, serving as the thirteenth shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate during the late Muromachi period. He ascended to the position of shōgun in 1546 at the tender age of eleven, following in the footsteps of his father, the twelfth shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshiharu. His mother was a daughter of Konoe Hisamichi, later known as Keijuin.

Initially known by the name Yoshifushi, which is sometimes transliterated as Yoshifuji, he later adopted the name Yoshiteru in 1554, a change that has led to his enduring recognition. His childhood name, Kikubemaru, reflects the traditional practices of naming among samurai families.

Yoshiteru's reign lasted until his untimely death on June 17, 1565, marking a significant period in the history of the Ashikaga shogunate. His younger brother, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, would go on to become the fifteenth shōgun, continuing the family's legacy in the tumultuous landscape of feudal Japan.
