As the first wife of the legendary Brazilian bossa nova guitarist João Gilberto, she adopted his surname professionally even after their divorce in nineteen sixty-four. Her career took a significant turn in the mid-1960s when she gained international fame for her mesmerizing vocal performance on the iconic song 'The Girl from Ipanema', which earned a Grammy Award in nineteen sixty-five.
