Balaji Baji Rao

Balaji Baji Rao, born on December eighth, seventeen twenty, and commonly known as Nana Saheb I, served as the eighth Peshwa of the Maratha Empire from seventeen forty until his death in seventeen sixty-one. He succeeded his father, Baji Rao I, and during his reign, the Chhatrapati, the Maratha monarch, primarily held a ceremonial role while the Peshwa wielded actual power.

Under Balaji Baji Rao's leadership, the Maratha Empire transformed into a confederation, with influential chiefs such as the Holkars, Scindias, and Bhonsles of Nagpur gaining semi-autonomous control. His administration marked the zenith of the Maratha domains, which expanded significantly, reaching from Peshawar in the northwest to Srirangapatna in Karnataka and Midnapore in West Bengal.

Balaji Baji Rao implemented numerous fiscal and administrative reforms, aided by his cousin Sadashivrao Bhau. His governance not only strengthened the empire but also facilitated extensive public works, including the construction of canals, bridges, temples, and rest houses for travelers, particularly in Pune, the imperial capital.

Throughout his two-decade reign, he successfully brought several major powers of the Indian subcontinent under Maratha dominance. He subdued the Mughals in the north, the Nizam of Hyderabad in the south, and the Nawab of Bengal in the east. Additionally, he diminished Afghan control over Punjab, curtailed their advances toward Delhi, and effectively neutralized the Rajput and Rohilla states, as well as the State of Oudh.
