Ban Biao

Ban Biao, a prominent historian and politician of the Han dynasty, was born in Xianyang, Shaanxi, in the year three CE. He was the nephew of the renowned poet and concubine to Emperor Cheng, Consort Ban. This familial connection placed him in a unique position within the court and the literary world of his time.

He is best known for initiating the monumental work, the Book of Han, which was later completed by his son, Ban Gu, and his daughter, Ban Zhao. His brother, Ban Chao, a celebrated general, also contributed to this historical narrative, enriching it with his military experiences and insights.

In addition to his contributions to historical literature, Ban Biao authored the influential essay titled Treatise on the Mandate of Kings, which has been recognized for shaping the Chinese understanding of sovereignty. This work is included in the esteemed Wenxuan anthology, highlighting its significance in Chinese thought.

There is an intriguing theory regarding Ban Biao's heritage, suggesting that his mother may have been of Xiongnu descent, linked to Jin Chang, an attendant to Emperor Yuan of Han. This potential lineage could explain the Ban family's adeptness in navigating the complexities of China's historical and foreign relations.
