Beorhtwulf of Mercia, a monarch of Anglo-Saxon England, ruled from either eight hundred thirty-nine or eight hundred forty until his death in eight hundred fifty-two. His lineage remains largely a mystery, though he may have had ties to Beornwulf, a previous king of Mercia. During his reign, Beorhtwulf revitalized the Mercian coinage, which had been nearly dormant under his predecessor, Wiglaf. His early coins bore a striking resemblance to those of Æthelwulf of Wessex, but as time progressed, Beorhtwulf introduced more independent designs.
Shortly after Beorhtwulf ascended to the throne, the Vikings launched a series of attacks on Mercia. The province of Lindsey was raided in eight hundred forty-one, followed by an assault on London, a vital commercial hub, in the subsequent year. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle notes that another Viking raid in eight hundred fifty-one forced Beorhtwulf to flee, although the invaders were ultimately defeated by Æthelwulf. This period of conflict likely had a detrimental effect on Mercia's economy, as evidenced by a significant decline in London coinage post-eight hundred fifty-one.
During Beorhtwulf's reign, the control of Berkshire shifted from Mercian to West Saxon hands. His authority over the Welsh is suggested by the rebellion they staged against his successor, Burgred, shortly after Beorhtwulf's passing. The charters from his time indicate a tumultuous relationship with the church, marked by Beorhtwulf's seizure and later return of church lands.
Beorhtwulf is believed to have had two sons, Beorhtfrith and Beorhtric. Beorhtric is known to have witnessed his father's charters, although he stopped doing so before the end of Beorhtwulf's reign. Beorhtfrith is mentioned in later accounts, particularly regarding his involvement in the murder of Wigstan, the grandson of Wiglaf, over a dispute involving marriage to Wigstan's widowed mother, Ælfflæd. While the exact circumstances of Beorhtwulf's death remain undocumented, it is generally accepted that he passed away in eight hundred fifty-two.
