Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Berenice II

Berenice II, born on December second in the year two hundred sixty-seven BCE, was a remarkable queen regnant of Cyrenaica from two hundred fifty-eight to two hundred forty-six BCE. Her reign marked a significant period in the history of the Ptolemaic dynasty, as she later became queen of Ptolemaic Egypt from two hundred forty-six to two hundred twenty-two BCE through her marriage to Ptolemy III.

Her ascent to power began with her marriage to Demetrius the Fair, which secured his claim to the throne of Cyrenaica following the death of her father, Magas, around two hundred fifty or two hundred forty-nine BCE. After a brief power struggle with her mother, Berenice wed her half-cousin Ptolemy III, the third ruler of the Ptolemaic kingdom, a union that facilitated the reintegration of Cyrenaica into the Ptolemaic empire.

As queen of Egypt, Berenice II was not merely a figurehead; she actively participated in governance and was venerated in the Ptolemaic state cult alongside her husband. Her legacy includes her unique act of sacrificing her hair as a votive offering, an event that led to the naming of the constellation Coma Berenices in her honor.

Tragically, Berenice's life was cut short when she was murdered by the regent Sosibius shortly after her son, Ptolemy IV Philopator, ascended to the throne in two hundred twenty-one BCE. Her story remains a testament to her strength and influence in a tumultuous era.
