Ferdinand "Bongbong" Romualdez Marcos Jr., born on September 13, 1957, is a prominent Filipino politician who has held the office of the 17th president of the Philippines since 2022. As the only son of former president Ferdinand Marcos and first lady Imelda Marcos, he has been a significant figure in Philippine politics, navigating a complex legacy.
Marcos began his political career in 1980 when he was elected vice governor of Ilocos Norte, running unopposed under the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan party. He ascended to the governorship in 1983, but his family's rule ended with the People Power Revolution in 1986, leading to their exile in Hawaii. After his father's death in 1989, he returned to the Philippines in 1991 to face various legal challenges.
Throughout his career, Marcos has held multiple political positions, including representative of Ilocos Norte's second district and senator. He made an unsuccessful bid for vice president in 2016, losing to Leni Robredo. However, he achieved a significant victory in the 2022 presidential election, securing nearly fifty-nine percent of the vote, despite criticisms regarding his campaign's historical narratives.
As president, Marcos has also taken on the role of Secretary of Agriculture, continuing infrastructure initiatives from the previous administration while shifting foreign policy to strengthen ties with the United States. His presidency has faced challenges, including controversies over the national budget and political rifts within his administration, particularly with Vice President Sara Duterte.
