Bushra al-Assad, born on October twenty-fourth, nineteen sixty, is the first child and only daughter of Hafez al-Assad, the former president of Syria who held office from nineteen seventy-one until his death in two thousand. She is notably the sister of Bashar al-Assad, who succeeded their father as president.
In her personal life, Bushra was married to Assef Shawkat, who served as the deputy chief of staff of the Syrian Armed Forces and was previously the head of Syrian Military Intelligence. Tragically, Shawkat was killed in the Damascus bombing on July eighteenth, two thousand twelve, an attack claimed by a coalition of Syrian opposition rebel groups.
The onset of the Syrian Civil War significantly impacted Bushra's life. In March two thousand twelve, she was included on a list of Syrian government figures facing European Union economic sanctions and travel bans. Subsequently, on September twenty-eighth, two thousand twelve, reports emerged that she had fled Syria with her five children, seeking refuge in the United Arab Emirates.
In January two thousand thirteen, Bushra was joined by her mother, Anisa Makhlouf, in Dubai, marking a significant moment in her life as she navigated the challenges brought on by the conflict in her homeland.
