Caroline of Ansbach

Caroline of Ansbach, born on March first, sixteen eighty-three, was a prominent figure in British history, serving as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and Electress of Hanover from June eleventh, seventeen twenty-seven, until her death in seventeen thirty-seven. As the wife of King George II, she played a crucial role in the political landscape of her time.

Orphaned at a young age, Caroline was raised in the enlightened court of her guardians, King Frederick I and Queen Sophia Charlotte of Prussia. This environment broadened her education and instilled in her a liberal outlook, heavily influenced by her close friend, Sophia Charlotte. Her upbringing prepared her for a life of political engagement and influence.

Caroline's marriage to George Augustus, who was third in line to the British throne, marked a significant turning point in her life. After rejecting the proposal of Archduke Charles of Austria, she wed George Augustus, and together they had eight children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. Moving to Britain in seventeen fourteen, she became an active participant in the political opposition against her father-in-law, King George I.

As both Princess and later Queen, Caroline was known for her political acumen, particularly in her association with Robert Walpole, a key opposition politician. Her tenure included four regencies during her husband's absences in Hanover, and she is credited with fortifying the House of Hanover's position in Britain during a tumultuous period. Following her death in seventeen thirty-seven, Caroline was mourned deeply by her political allies and her husband, who chose not to remarry.
