Chilperic II

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Chilperic II

Chilperic II, born in six hundred seventy, was a monarch who ascended to the throne of the Franks in seven hundred fifteen. The son of Childeric II and Bilichild, he faced a tumultuous childhood marked by tragedy, as both his parents and his elder brother Dagobert were assassinated in six hundred seventy-five. To safeguard his life amidst the violent power struggles of his family, he was taken to a monastery, where he was raised under the name Daniel until the death of Dagobert III.

At the age of forty-three, Chilperic was brought forth from the monastery and proclaimed king, initially seen as a pawn for Ragenfrid, the mayor of the palace of Neustria. However, he quickly proved himself to be a formidable leader and warrior, leading his troops into battle with courage and determination. In seven hundred sixteen, he and Ragenfrid launched a campaign into Austrasia, confronting the forces of Charles Martel and Plectrude, ultimately achieving victory and gaining recognition as king.

Despite his early successes, Chilperic's fortunes changed dramatically. Following a series of defeats, including a significant loss at the Battle of Amblève, he found himself increasingly overshadowed by Charles Martel, who solidified his power in Neustria. In seven hundred eighteen, after a failed alliance with Odo the Great, Chilperic was forced to surrender his political authority to Charles, who was recognized as the Mayor over all the kingdoms.

In seven hundred nineteen, Chilperic II was officially acknowledged as the King of all the Franks, but his reign was short-lived, lasting only a year. He passed away in Attigny and was laid to rest in Noyon. There remains uncertainty regarding his lineage, particularly whether he was the father of Childeric III, adding a layer of intrigue to his historical legacy.
