Over his career, he achieved remarkable milestones, including a career-high singles ranking of world No. 39 in October 1995. His journey through the sport saw him reach the fourth round of the 1997 Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the prestigious Monte Carlo Masters the same year.

Representing Norway with pride, Ruud participated in three consecutive Olympic Games, showcasing his talent on an international stage. His best Olympic performance came in Atlanta in 1996, where he advanced to the third round, further solidifying his status as a top competitor.

Throughout his career, Ruud claimed twelve titles on the Challenger Series, demonstrating his prowess in the sport. However, he reached only one ATP Tour final, where he faced Fernando Meligeni at the 1995 Swedish Open in Båstad, ultimately finishing as the runner-up.
