Christian V of Denmark

Christian V of Denmark, born on April fifteenth, sixteen forty-six, ascended to the throne as King of Denmark and Norway in sixteen seventy. His reign, which lasted until his death in sixteen ninety-nine, marked a significant period in the history of the two kingdoms.

Well-regarded by the common people, Christian V was the first monarch to be anointed at Frederiksborg Castle chapel as an absolute ruler, following the decree that established the supremacy of the king in Denmark-Norway. He strengthened the absolutist system against the aristocracy by continuing his father's policy of integrating both Holstein nobles and commoners from Denmark and Norway into state service.

As a king, Christian V sought to manifest his power through grand architectural projects, aspiring to create a Danish Versailles. He was the first to utilize the Throne Chair of Denmark, crafted in sixteen seventy-one, to symbolize his authority. His reign was guided by the motto 'Pietate et Justitia,' which translates to 'With piety and justice.'
