Christopher Lekapenos

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Christopher Lekapenos

Christopher Lekapenos, born in the year eight hundred ninety, was a prominent figure in the Byzantine Empire, serving as co-emperor from nine hundred twenty-one until his untimely death in nine hundred thirty-one. As the eldest son of Emperor Romanos I Lekapenos, he was positioned to play a significant role in the imperial lineage.

In the spring of nine hundred nineteen, Christopher was appointed as megas hetaireiarches, the commander of the palace guard, following his father's assumption of guardianship over the young Emperor Constantine VII. This strategic move was part of Romanos's broader plan to elevate his family's status within the empire.

On the twenty-first of May in nine hundred twenty-one, Christopher was officially raised to the rank of co-emperor, a decision made by his father to ensure the Lekapenos family's precedence over the Macedonian line of Constantine VII. However, his reign was not without intrigue; in nine hundred twenty-eight, his father-in-law, Niketas, attempted to persuade him to usurp his father, leading to Niketas's banishment when the plot failed.

Christopher's life came to a close in August of nine hundred thirty-one, after which he was succeeded by his father and his two brothers, Stephen and Constantine Lekapenos, alongside Constantine VII. The political landscape shifted dramatically in December of nine hundred forty-four when his brothers overthrew and exiled their father, only to face exile themselves in January of nine hundred forty-five after a failed attempt to oust Constantine VII.
