Clovis II, born in the year six hundred thirty-five, ascended to the throne as King of the Franks in Neustria and Burgundy following the death of his father, Dagobert I, in six hundred thirty-nine. His reign began during a tumultuous period, as his brother Sigebert III had already been ruling Austrasia since six hundred thirty-four.
Initially, Clovis was under the regency of his mother, Nanthild, who guided him until her untimely death at the age of thirty-two in six hundred forty-two. Her passing marked a significant turning point in Clovis's life, as it allowed the secular magnates to exert their influence over the young king, gradually diminishing the royal power.
During this time, Clovis II found himself swayed by prominent figures such as Aega and Erchinoald, who sought to manipulate the monarchy for their own gain. The Burgundian mayor of the palace, Flaochad, notably used Clovis to orchestrate a confrontation with his rival, Willebad, leading to a decisive battle in Autun where Willebad met his demise.
