Growing up in Manhattan, New York, Cole is the son of Greg Anthony, a former NBA player who enjoyed an eleven-season career. He began his high school journey at Archbishop Molloy High School before transferring to Oak Hill Academy for his senior year, where he solidified his reputation as a top-tier talent.

As a consensus five-star recruit, Cole was recognized as the best point guard in the 2019 class. His senior year was particularly noteworthy, as he earned first-team honors from USA Today All-USA and was named the most valuable player in prestigious events such as the McDonald's All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit.

During his freshman season at the University of North Carolina, Anthony faced challenges due to injury but still managed to earn third-team All-ACC accolades. His international experience includes leading the United States to a gold medal at the FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship in St. Catharines, Ontario, where he was also named to the all-tournament team.
