Didier Drogba, born on March 11, 1978, is a celebrated Ivorian former professional footballer renowned for his prowess as a striker. He holds the distinction of being the all-time top scorer and former captain of the Ivory Coast national team, ranking fourth among the all-time African men's top goalscorers in international football. Drogba is best known for his illustrious career at Chelsea, where he became the club’s all-time top goalscorer as a foreign player and ranks as the fourth-highest goalscorer overall.
Beginning his professional journey at the age of 21 with Ligue 2 club Le Mans, Drogba quickly made a name for himself. After a successful stint at Guingamp, where he netted seventeen goals in thirty-four appearances during the 2002–03 season, he transferred to Olympique de Marseille. There, he finished as the third highest goalscorer in the 2003–04 season with nineteen goals, helping the club reach the UEFA Cup Final.
In July 2004, Drogba made a significant move to Premier League club Chelsea for twenty-four million pounds, making him the most expensive Ivorian player at that time. His debut season was historic, as he played a crucial role in securing Chelsea's first league title in fifty years, followed by another Premier League title the next year. Notably, he was named in the 2007 FIFA World XI and became the first African player to score one hundred Premier League goals in March 2012.
Drogba's legacy includes remarkable achievements such as scoring in four FA Cup finals and leading Chelsea to victory in the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, where he scored an equalizer and converted the winning penalty. After a brief period with Shanghai Shenhua, he joined Galatasaray, contributing to their Turkish Super Cup win. He returned to Chelsea in July 2014 and later played for Montreal Impact before becoming a player-owner of Phoenix Rising in 2017, retiring a year later at the age of forty. His contributions to football were recognized with his induction into the Premier League Hall of Fame on April 21, 2022.
On the international stage, Drogba debuted for the Ivory Coast in 2002 and captained the team from 2006. He is the nation's all-time top goalscorer with sixty-five goals in one hundred five appearances, leading the team to their first FIFA World Cup in 2006 and two Africa Cup of Nations finals. Beyond football, Drogba has been a significant figure in humanitarian efforts, serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme and becoming Vice President of Peace and Sport in December 2018.
