Donald Alexander Macdonald

Donald Alexander Macdonald, born on February seventeenth, eighteen seventeen, in St. Raphael's, Upper Canada, was a prominent figure in Canadian politics and business. He received his education at St. Raphael's College, where he was taught by the first Catholic Bishop of Ontario, Alexander Macdonell. His career began as a railway contractor, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in both politics and commerce.

Macdonald's political journey commenced when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, serving from eighteen fifty-seven until eighteen sixty-seven. Following the confederation, he became the Liberal Member of Parliament for Glengarry in the House of Commons of Canada, a position he held from eighteen sixty-seven to eighteen seventy-five. During this time, he also took on the role of Postmaster General of Canada, contributing significantly to the development of the nation.

In eighteen seventy-five, Macdonald was appointed as the fourth Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, a prestigious role he maintained until eighteen eighty. His leadership and influence during this period were notable, and he continued to be a respected figure until his passing in Montreal in eighteen ninety-six.

In addition to his political career, Macdonald served as a Major in the 4th Battalion, Glengarry Militia, taking over as Commanding Officer in eighteen fifty-two after his brother John. He was part of a notable family, being the brother of John Sandfield Macdonald, the first Premier of Ontario, and Alexander Francis Macdonald, who served as the MP for Cornwall from eighteen seventy-four to eighteen seventy-eight.
