Duchess Alexandra of Oldenburg

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Duchess Alexandra of Oldenburg

Duchess Alexandra of Oldenburg, born on May second, eighteen thirty-eight, was a remarkable figure in Russian history, known for her deep religious convictions and philanthropic endeavors. As the eldest daughter of Duke Peter of Oldenburg and Princess Therese of Nassau-Weilburg, she grew up in the company of the Romanovs, her father being a nephew of Tsar Nicholas I. This upbringing instilled in her a strong sense of duty towards those in need, influenced by her artistically gifted and charitable parents.

In eighteen fifty-six, Alexandra married her first cousin once removed, Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia, the third son of Tsar Nicholas I. Raised in the Lutheran faith, she converted to Orthodoxy, adopting the name Grand Duchess Alexandra Petrovna. Despite the royal connection, her marriage was fraught with difficulties, marked by her husband's infidelity and her own serious demeanor. The couple had two sons, Grand Duke Nicholas and Grand Duke Peter, but the union ultimately led to separation in eighteen seventy-nine.

Following the collapse of her marriage, Alexandra faced significant challenges, including a carriage accident that left her nearly paralyzed. Encouraged by her brother-in-law, Tsar Alexander II, she sought treatment abroad. In eighteen eighty-one, she returned to Russia and settled in Kiev, where she regained her mobility. Her commitment to service culminated in the founding of the Pokrovsky Nunnery in eighteen eighty-nine, a convent dedicated to nursing and providing free medical care to the impoverished.

In the same year, she embraced the life of an Orthodox nun under the name Anastasia, a secret she kept until her passing. Alexandra devoted her later years to the nunnery and its hospital, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and care. She passed away in nineteen hundred at the convent, remembered for her unwavering dedication to charity and the welfare of others.
