Elizabeth Woodville

Elizabeth Woodville, born around 1437, emerged from a family of middle rank in the English social hierarchy. Her mother, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, was connected to the royal family as an aunt-by-marriage to King Henry VI. Elizabeth's early life was marked by her first marriage to John Grey of Groby, a minor supporter of the House of Lancaster, who died at the Second Battle of St Albans in 1461, leaving her a widowed mother of two young sons.

In 1464, Elizabeth's life took a dramatic turn when she secretly married King Edward IV, making her the first English king since the Norman Conquest to wed a commoner. This union not only elevated her status but also led to her becoming the first consort to be crowned queen. The couple had ten children, and their marriage significantly enriched Elizabeth's family, although it also sparked hostility from powerful figures like Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick.

The political landscape shifted dramatically following the death of Edward IV in 1483. Elizabeth remained a significant political figure even after her son, briefly proclaimed King Edward V, was deposed by Richard III. The mysterious disappearance of her sons led to accusations against Richard, although no evidence linked him to their fate. Elizabeth played a crucial role in the rise of Henry VII in 1485, whose marriage to her eldest daughter, Elizabeth of York, effectively ended the Wars of the Roses and established the Tudor dynasty.

Despite her influential position, Elizabeth eventually had to cede prominence to Henry VII's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort.
