Emperor Hanzei

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Emperor Hanzei

Emperor Hanzei, also known as Emperor Hansho, is recognized as the 18th Emperor of Japan in the traditional order of succession. His reign, though brief, is conventionally dated from four hundred six CE to four hundred ten CE. The historical records, including the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, provide insights into his life, although no definitive dates can be assigned to his existence.

During his time as ruler, Hanzei was noted for having an 'Imperial Lady' and a 'Concubine,' with whom he fathered four children. While his reign is often described as unremarkable, it is significant for the introduction of ranked concubines, a custom borrowed from Chinese tradition.

Hanzei's death in four hundred ten AD left the throne without a named heir, prompting Imperial ministers to step in and select a successor. The exact location of his grave remains a mystery, yet he is traditionally honored at a memorial Shinto tomb.

Modern historians have debated the authenticity of Hanzei's title and existence, suggesting that the name 'Hanzei' and the designation of 'Emperor' were likely ascribed by later generations. Despite the uncertainties surrounding his life, there is a general consensus regarding his historical presence.
