Emperor Muzong of Tang, born in the year seven hundred ninety-five, ascended to the throne in eight hundred twenty following the tumultuous reign of his father, Emperor Xianzong. His rise to power came after a period marked by intrigue and alleged assassination, as he was proclaimed emperor amidst the chaos that enveloped the Tang dynasty.

During his brief reign from eight hundred twenty to eight hundred twenty-four, Muzong's focus shifted away from governance. Instead of addressing the pressing issues of his empire, he indulged in lavish feasts and excessive drinking, which led to a significant neglect of his imperial responsibilities. This lack of attention allowed regional military governors, known as jiedushi, to assert their influence, challenging the authority of the central government.

The consequences of Muzong's indulgent lifestyle were dire. The stability of the Tang dynasty began to unravel, with three circuits north of the Yellow River effectively gaining de facto independence. Corruption flourished within the court, further exacerbating the decline of the once-mighty dynasty.
