Emperor Ninkō

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Emperor Ninkō

Emperor Ninkō, born on March sixteenth, eighteen hundred, was the one hundred twentieth emperor of Japan, reigning from eighteen seventeen until his death in eighteen forty-six. His reign was marked by a significant decline in the power of the ruling shōgun, as various disasters, including famine, corruption, and increasing Western interference, eroded public trust in the bakufu government.

During his time on the throne, Ninkō sought to revive certain court rituals and practices, honoring the wishes of his father. However, the extent of his involvement in the political turmoil of his era remains uncertain. His reign coincided with the early stages of the bakumatsu, a period signaling the end of military government in Japan.

Emperor Ninkō's family life was complex, as he fathered fifteen children with various concubines, though only three survived to adulthood. His fourth son, Imperial Prince Osahito, ascended to the throne as Emperor Kōmei following Ninkō's death in eighteen forty-six, continuing the imperial lineage amidst a changing political landscape.
