George Hearst

George Hearst, born on September third, eighteen twenty, was a prominent American businessman and politician, known as the patriarch of the Hearst business dynasty. His early years were spent on a modest farm in Missouri, where he developed a strong work ethic that would later fuel his ambitious ventures in the mining industry.

In the late eighteen seventies, Hearst made a significant mark in the mining sector by developing and expanding the Homestake Mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This operation became one of the most productive gold mines in the United States, with its gold production continuing uninterrupted until two thousand one. In eighteen seventy-nine, he took a bold step by listing the mine on the New York Stock Exchange, which further solidified his status as a key player in the mining industry.

After relocating to San Francisco in the early eighteen sixties, Hearst transitioned into politics, serving one term in the state legislature as a representative of San Francisco. His political career continued to flourish when he was appointed as a United States senator in eighteen eighty-six to fill a vacancy. Later that year, he was elected as a Democrat and served in the Senate until his death in eighteen ninety-one.

George Hearst's legacy extends beyond his business and political endeavors; he was also the father of William Randolph Hearst, his only child from a late marriage at the age of forty-two. William would go on to become a renowned newspaperman and publisher, serving as a primary inspiration for Orson Welles's iconic film, Citizen Kane.
