Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia, born on November twenty-second, eighteen seventy-eight, was the youngest son of Emperor Alexander III and the youngest brother of Nicholas II. His early life was marked by the tumultuous events surrounding the Russian monarchy, as he was born during the reign of his grandfather, Alexander II. Following the assassination of Alexander II in eighteen eighty-one, Michael became third in line to the throne, eventually rising to second in line after the death of his father in eighteen ninety-four.
Michael's position as heir presumptive was complicated by the birth of his nephew, Alexei, in nineteen oh four. Despite this, Michael's concerns about Alexei's health, due to his severe haemophilia, led him to believe he might still ascend to the throne. His personal life, however, was fraught with scandal; he caused a stir at court by taking Natalia Sergeyevna Wulfert, a married woman, as his lover. Despite being sent away to Orel to avoid scandal, Michael continued to pursue Natalia, and they had a son, George, born in nineteen ten.
In a surprising turn of events, Michael married Natalia in nineteen twelve, seemingly in an effort to distance himself from the line of succession. The couple then left Russia to live in exile across France, Switzerland, and England. However, with the outbreak of World War I, Michael returned to Russia and took command of a cavalry division, demonstrating his commitment to his country during a time of crisis.
On March fifteenth, nineteen seventeen, Nicholas II abdicated, and Michael was named as his successor, taking on the title of Emperor Michael II. However, he deferred acceptance of the throne, awaiting ratification by an elected assembly. Tragically, he was never confirmed as emperor, and following the Russian Revolution of nineteen seventeen, he faced imprisonment and ultimately met a tragic end.
