Handan Sultan

Handan Sultan, born in 1570, was a significant figure in the Ottoman Empire, serving as the Valide Sultan and mother to Sultan Ahmed I. She entered the Imperial Harem around 1583 and became a consort of Prince Mehmed, later Sultan Mehmed III. Through strategic alliances, particularly with her mother-in-law Safiye Sultan, she ensured her son Ahmed's position as heir to the throne following Mehmed III's ascension in 1595.

After the death of her husband in 1603, Handan Sultan emerged from the shadows of her mother-in-law's influence. She became the first recognized de facto Regent of the Ottoman Empire, wielding considerable power and authority during her son's reign. Her tenure as Valide Sultan, though brief, was marked by significant political maneuvering, including the banishment of Safiye and her allies.

Handan Sultan's contributions to the empire included the abolition of the law of fratricide, which had previously dictated the fate of potential rivals to the throne. She established an effective government apparatus, demonstrating her capability as a ruler in her own right. Despite her impactful two-year reign, she passed away in 1605, leaving behind a legacy that would influence the course of the empire.
