Ieng Thirith

Ieng Thirith, born on March tenth, nineteen thirty-two, was a prominent figure in the Khmer Rouge regime, known for her roles as both a politician and a teacher. Although she did not hold a position on the Khmer Rouge Standing Committee or the Central Committee, her influence within the regime was significant. She was married to Ieng Sary, who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs during this tumultuous period in Cambodian history.

From October nineteen seventy-five until the regime's collapse in nineteen seventy-nine, Ieng Thirith held the position of Minister of Social Affairs. Her contributions to the Khmer Rouge were marked by her commitment to the party's ideology, despite the controversies surrounding the regime's actions.

In addition to her political career, Ieng Thirith was the sister of Khieu Ponnary, the first wife of the infamous leader Pol Pot. This familial connection further intertwined her life with the key figures of the Khmer Rouge. In November two thousand seven, she and her husband were arrested by the Extraordinary Chamber in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on serious charges, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
