Isabella of France

Isabella of France, born around 1295, was a remarkable figure in English history, known for her intelligence, beauty, and diplomatic acumen. As the youngest child of King Philip IV of France and Joan I of Navarre, she became Queen of England through her marriage to King Edward II. Her arrival in England at the tender age of twelve coincided with a tumultuous period marked by conflict between the king and powerful baronial factions.

Initially, Isabella supported her husband during his reign, even forming a working relationship with his favorite, Piers Gaveston. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically after Gaveston's death in 1312, leading Edward to favor Hugh Despenser the Younger. This change strained Isabella's marriage, and by 1325, she found herself at a crossroads, unable to tolerate Despenser's influence.

On a diplomatic mission to France, Isabella's relationship with Roger Mortimer blossomed, and together they plotted to depose Edward II. In 1326, she returned to England with a small mercenary army, swiftly gaining support and ultimately deposing her husband. Isabella became the de facto regent for her young son, Edward III, although her reign was marred by controversy, including speculation about her involvement in Edward II's murder.

Despite her initial successes, Isabella's regency faced challenges, including her extravagant spending and the unpopularity of her decisions. In 1330, her son Edward III asserted his authority, leading to Mortimer's execution and Isabella's imprisonment. However, she was soon released and spent her later years as a wealthy courtier, reconnecting with her family, particularly her daughter Joan, Queen of Scots, and her grandson Edward, Prince of Wales.
