James van Riemsdyk, often referred to by his initials JVR, is a prominent American professional ice hockey player born on May 4, 1989, in Middletown, New Jersey. Currently, he plays as a left winger for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL). His journey in ice hockey began in his childhood, where he played minor hockey with local clubs before making a significant move to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to join the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
During his time in Ann Arbor, van Riemsdyk formed a close friendship with fellow player Patrick Kane, both of whom would later be drafted in the top two spots of the 2007 NHL entry draft. Instead of jumping straight into the NHL, he opted to play college hockey at the University of New Hampshire for two seasons. His impressive performance, leading the team in scoring as a sophomore, led him to forfeit his remaining college eligibility and sign an entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Van Riemsdyk made his NHL debut in 2009 and quickly made a name for himself with strong playoff performances. However, injuries plagued him during the 2011–12 season. In the summer of 2012, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he enjoyed a successful stint, setting personal records for single-season points and goals. He also celebrated significant milestones, including his 200th career NHL goal and contributing to the Maple Leafs' historic twenty-thousandth goal.
After becoming a free agent following the 2017–18 season, van Riemsdyk returned to the Flyers with a five-year contract. His first season back saw him battling injuries but still achieving impressive stats, including twenty-seven goals. In February 2021, he reached the milestone of five hundred career NHL points. Beyond his club career, van Riemsdyk has proudly represented the United States in various international tournaments, including the 2014 Winter Olympics.
