Jerry Butler

Jerry Butler Jr., born on December 8, 1939, was a multifaceted American soul singer-songwriter, producer, musician, and politician. He first gained prominence as the original lead singer of the renowned R&B vocal group, the Impressions, which was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Butler's departure from the group in 1960 marked the beginning of a successful solo career, during which he achieved over fifty-five Billboard Pop and R&B Chart hits.

Among his most celebrated songs are "He Will Break Your Heart," "Let It Be Me," and "Only the Strong Survive," each showcasing his distinctive voice and emotional depth. His contributions to music were recognized when he was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2015, solidifying his legacy in the genre.

In addition to his musical achievements, Butler made significant contributions to public service. He served as a Commissioner for Cook County, Illinois, from 1985 to 2018. During his tenure on the seventeen-member county government board, he chaired the Health and Hospitals Committee and held the position of Vice Chair of the Construction Committee, demonstrating his commitment to community welfare.
