Joan Fontaine

Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland, known to the world as Joan Fontaine, was a remarkable British-American actress whose career flourished during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born on October 22, 1917, Fontaine captivated audiences with her performances in over forty-five films across five decades. She was the younger sister of fellow actress Olivia de Havilland, and their well-documented rivalry added an intriguing layer to her public persona.

Fontaine's cinematic journey began in 1935 when she signed with RKO Pictures. Her early roles in films such as The Man Who Found Himself and Gunga Din set the stage for her breakout performance in Alfred Hitchcock's iconic film Rebecca in 1940. This role not only garnered her critical acclaim but also marked the beginning of her three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

In 1941, Fontaine achieved the pinnacle of her career by winning the Academy Award for her role in Hitchcock's Suspicion, making her the only actress to receive an Oscar for acting in a Hitchcock film. Throughout the 1940s, she continued to shine in dramatic roles, including Letter from an Unknown Woman and the comedy You Gotta Stay Happy, which she co-produced with her second husband, William Dozier.

As the 1950s approached, Fontaine's film career began to wane, leading her to explore opportunities in stage, radio, and television. She appeared in fewer films during the 1960s, with notable titles including Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and her final film, The Witches, released in 1966. In 1978, she published her autobiography, No Bed of Roses, and continued to act until 1994, leaving behind a legacy that solidified her status as a Hollywood icon.
