John Campbell Merriam

John Campbell Merriam, born on October twentieth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a pioneering American paleontologist, educator, and conservationist. He made significant contributions to the field of vertebrate paleontology, particularly as the first vertebrate paleontologist on the West Coast of the United States.

His most notable work involved the taxonomy of vertebrate fossils at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, where he conducted extensive research on the genus Smilodon, commonly known as the sabertooth cat.
