Joséphine de Beauharnais

Joséphine de Beauharnais, born on June twenty-third, seventeen sixty-three, was a prominent figure in French history, best known as the first wife of Emperor Napoleon I. Her tenure as Empress of the French spanned from May eighteenth, eighteen oh four, until the annulment of their marriage on January tenth, eighteen ten. In addition to her role as Empress, she held the title of Queen of Italy from May twenty-sixth, eighteen oh five, until the same annulment.

Before her marriage to Napoleon, Joséphine experienced the tragedy of losing her first husband, Alexandre de Beauharnais, who was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. Following his execution, she endured imprisonment in the Carmes prison for five days. Through her children with Beauharnais, she became the grandmother of Emperor Napoleon III of France and Empress Amélie of Brazil, linking her to several current royal families across Europe.

Despite not bearing any children for Napoleon, which ultimately led to the annulment of their marriage, Joséphine remained a significant figure in his life, receiving numerous love letters from him, many of which have survived to this day. Her influence extended beyond her personal life; she was a dedicated patron of the arts, collaborating with sculptors, painters, and interior decorators to create a distinctive Consular and Empire style at the Château de Malmaison.

At the Château de Malmaison, Joséphine became one of the leading art collectors of her time, amassing a remarkable collection of sculptures and paintings. She was particularly noted for her exquisite rose garden, which she meticulously supervised, further showcasing her passion for beauty and the arts.
