Leo IV the Khazar

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Leo IV the Khazar

Leo IV the Khazar, born on January twenty-fifth, seven hundred fifty, was a significant figure in Byzantine history, serving as emperor from seven hundred seventy-five until his untimely death in seven hundred eighty.

He was the son of Emperor Constantine V and Empress Tzitzak, and his rise to power began when he was elevated to co-emperor in seven hundred fifty-one. His marriage to Irene of Athens in seven hundred sixty-nine further solidified his position within the imperial family.

Upon the death of his father in September seven hundred seventy-five, while engaged in a campaign against the Bulgars, Leo IV ascended as the senior emperor. His reign was marked by military prowess, notably in seven hundred seventy-eight when he led a successful raid into Abbasid Syria, achieving a decisive victory against the Abbasid army near Germanikeia.

Sadly, Leo IV's reign was cut short when he succumbed to tuberculosis on September eighth, seven hundred eighty. His legacy continued through his underage son, Constantine VI, with Irene stepping in as regent during this transitional period.
