Louis Desmarais

Louis R. Desmarais, born on February 16, 1923, was a prominent figure in Canadian politics and a skilled chartered accountant. His career in public service began as a member of the Liberal party, where he made significant contributions to the House of Commons of Canada.

In 1968, Desmarais took on the role of president at Les Entreprises de Transport Provincial limitée, showcasing his leadership abilities. He also served as president of Canada Steamship Line, where he worked closely with André Poliquin, the head manager in Quebec City.

Desmarais represented the riding of Dollard after his victory in the 1979 federal election, successfully securing re-election in 1980. His tenure in the 31st and 32nd Canadian Parliaments was marked by dedication and commitment to his constituents. However, his political journey faced a setback in 1984 when he was defeated by Gerry Weiner of the Progressive Conservative Party.

Beyond his political career, Desmarais came from a distinguished family. His brother, Jean Noël Desmarais, was a respected physician and senator, while another brother, Paul Desmarais, achieved great success as a billionaire businessman.
