Manuel I of Trebizond

Manuel I of Trebizond, born in the year twelve eighteen, ascended to the throne as the Emperor of Trebizond in twelve thirty-eight. He was the son of Emperor Alexios I and his wife, Theodora, and his reign marked a significant period for the Empire, which stretched along the southern coast of the Black Sea.

Despite the limited documentation of his reign, the fourteenth-century chronicler Michael Panaretos praised Manuel as 'the greatest general and the most fortunate,' highlighting his virtuous rule in the eyes of God. However, the most notable event recorded during his time was a catastrophic fire that devastated the city of Trebizond in January of twelve fifty-three.

External sources provide insight into the major events of Manuel's reign, particularly the recovery of Sinope in twelve fifty-four. This city had been lost to the Sultanate of Rum forty years prior, marking a significant military achievement for Manuel and the Empire of Trebizond.
