Martin Lee

Martin Lee, born on June eighth, nineteen thirty-eight, is a distinguished politician and barrister from Hong Kong. He is widely recognized as the founding chairman of the United Democrats of Hong Kong, which later evolved into the Democratic Party, the leading pro-democracy party in the region. Lee's commitment to advocating for democracy and human rights has earned him the nickname 'Father of Democracy' in Hong Kong.

As a barrister, Lee held the position of chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-three. His political career began in nineteen eighty-five when he was elected to the Legislative Council, where he became a vocal advocate for human rights and democratic reforms. His involvement in the drafting of Hong Kong's Basic Law was significant, although he was expelled from the drafting committee following the Tiananmen Square protests in nineteen eighty-nine due to his outspoken criticism of the Chinese government.

In nineteen ninety, Lee founded the United Democrats of Hong Kong, which achieved remarkable success in the direct elections of nineteen ninety-one and nineteen ninety-five. Under his leadership, the party became one of the largest political entities in Hong Kong, working closely with the last colonial governor, Chris Patten, to promote constitutional reforms. However, in June nineteen ninety-seven, he was compelled to resign when the colonial legislature was dissolved, although he successfully regained his seat in the Legislative Council in nineteen ninety-eight.

Lee stepped down as chairman of the Democratic Party in December two thousand two and retired from the Legislative Council in two thousand eight. Until the enactment of the Hong Kong National Security Law on July first, two thousand twenty, he remained an active advocate for democracy, both locally and on the international stage.
