Marwan I

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Marwan I

Marwan ibn al-Hakam, known as Marwan I, was a pivotal figure in the Umayyad dynasty, serving as its fourth caliph for a brief period from 684 to 685. Born in the year six hundred twenty-three, he emerged as a significant political leader during a tumultuous era marked by civil strife and power struggles. His ascent to the caliphate came after the collapse of the Sufyanid house during the Second Fitna, and he established the Marwanid ruling house, which would dominate until the year seven hundred fifty.

Throughout his career, Marwan demonstrated military prowess and political acumen. He participated in campaigns against the Byzantine exarchate of Africa and served as governor of Fars under Uthman, the third Rashidun caliph. His loyalty to Uthman was evident when he was wounded during the siege that led to the caliph's assassination. In the ensuing chaos, Marwan aligned himself with Aisha's faction during the Battle of the Camel, showcasing his commitment to the Qurayshite cause.

After the establishment of the Umayyad Caliphate by Mu'awiya I, Marwan continued to play a crucial role, serving as governor of Medina and later organizing defenses against local uprisings in the Hejaz. Following the death of Yazid I, Marwan found himself in a precarious position as Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr declared himself caliph. However, with the support of pro-Umayyad tribes, Marwan was elected caliph after the death of Mu'awiya II, leading to a decisive victory at the Battle of Marj Rahit.

During his short reign, Marwan worked diligently to reestablish Umayyad authority across Egypt, Palestine, and northern Syria, countering the influence of Ibn al-Zubayr. He strategically positioned his sons in key roles, ensuring the continuation of his lineage's power. Although later narratives painted him as a tyrant, historians recognize Marwan I as a capable leader who laid the groundwork for the Umayyad dynasty's enduring legacy.
