Miguel I of Portugal

Dom Miguel I, born on October twenty-sixth, eighteen hundred and two, was a significant figure in Portuguese history, serving as King of Portugal from eighteen twenty-eight to eighteen thirty-four. He was the son of King John VI and Queen Carlota Joaquina, and his reign was marked by political turmoil and conflict.

After his involvement in the April Revolt of eighteen twenty-four, which supported absolutism, Miguel faced exile. However, he returned to Portugal in eighteen twenty-eight, assuming the role of regent and fiancé to his niece, Queen Maria II. His claim to the throne was rooted in the Fundamental Laws of the Kingdom, which he argued had stripped his brother, Pedro IV, and his daughter of their rights due to Pedro's actions in Brazil.

This assertion led to a complex and violent political landscape, characterized by the Portuguese Liberal Wars. These conflicts pitted authoritarian absolutists against progressive constitutionalists, resulting in widespread suffering, including deaths, imprisonments, and exiles.

Ultimately, Miguel's reign was short-lived, and he was forced from the throne. He spent the remaining thirty-two years of his life in exile, reflecting the turbulent nature of his rule and the enduring impact of his actions on Portugal's political landscape.
